Our caterpillars have turned into chrysalides! πŸ’š

7th May 2024
When we came into school this morning, our caterpillars were hanging from the top of the cup and had turned into chrysalides! They had started to change towards to end of last week but we had to let them safely harden into chrysalides over the weekend before moving them into the butterfly habitat. This morning, Miss McClean gently opened the cup and removed the lid with the chrysalides attached. She used cotton buds to remove any silk strands surrounding the chrysalides. This is the most important step! If the silk strands are not removed, the butterflies may become entangled when they emerge. The chrysalides were wiggling and shaking dramatically as she moved them! This behaviour is actually a natural defence mechanism. The chrysalides have now been moved from their cosy cup to their airy new home - the hatching habitat! πŸ›πŸ¦‹
